Summary, etc. | The concept “plebeian interpellation” describes the political strength of popular uprisings and spontaneous direct actions. By modifying the Althusserian concept of “interpellation” and combining it with that of “plebeian experience” (Breaugh, 2007), we wish to offer an account of the self-affirmation of the “those without part” (Rancière, 1990) by which they give themselves their own conditions of possibility through collective action. Such actions arise outside the ritualized forms of the constitution of public space. At the same time, they arise beyond any representation of the political order. This untamed form of interpellation occurs in the context of rebellion or “secessions” that are as many interruptions of the normal course of social reproduction. Yet the plebs must be understood for what it is, in the great tumult of its manifestation. |
