520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. In this auditory self-portrait, the author explores the hyper-local sounds that are peculiar to his own environment in northern California, where industrial agriculture is dominant, though it has not entirely extinguished the sounds of nature. The author applies some of the technical terms made popular by Bernie Krause in The Great Animal Orchestra. In the first half of the essay, Raskin describes the acoustics in his own life and in the immediate world around him. In the second half of the essay, he explores the acoustics in several key works of American literature, including Moby-Dick and Leaves of Grass that have shaped his own thinking and feeling and expanded his appreciation of sound. The works he writes about are hyper-local – they’re rooted in a particular time and place (the culture of mid‑nineteenth‑century USA) – though they’re also widely read American classics. They live in the author’s own head, which he describes as a kind of sonic library that’s filled with recordings of the literature he has known and has listened to attentively.
