Summary, etc. | The European Union’s democratic deficit is represented by a two-fold absence: the lack of a true separation of powers, and the lack of a European people. Strengthening the powers of the Council of the European Union could encourage a “second-degree democracy” to develop. Real change would be brought about by moving toward a confederal Europe. However, this option is off the table unless subordination to Europe is rejected, which is a choice few member states would make, regardless of the will of their citizens. |
