Summary, etc. | When one looks into the Christian legacy in the West, one generally aims to bring out the fixed representations that the Christians of the past would have handed down to today’s Westerners. The question is to determine to what extent these representations maintain an influence in the contemporary context, where all forms of life appear more or less acceptable. However, a more radical question can be posed: Has Christianity left Westerners with a substantial legacy of meanings? And what if Christianity, by exposing Jewish uniqueness, rather constituted a force that went beyond all legacies? Such is the question posed by the writings of Emmanuel Levinas and Benny Lévy. |
