Summary, etc. | When Mauritius gained independence in 1968, the Chagos Archipelago remained in British hands. Since then, it has been a bone of contention between Mauritius, which demands its return, and Great Britain, whose government staunchly opposes such a move. The matter is now due to go before the International Court of Justice in The Hague, in a case brought by the Mauritian government. At stake in particular is the island of Diego Garcia, which houses the United States’ largest military base in the Indian Ocean. |
