Summary, etc. | Democratization processes that took place in sub-Saharan Africa in the 1990s have brought a proliferation of elections. Gabon has been part of this trend. Since 1990, the country has organized about ten electoral competitions (presidential, general, local, or referendum). Focusing on the 2006 general elections, this article analyzes electoral behaviors in Gabon. It describes how these behaviors are structured by a political culture largely based on redistribution and nepotism, which has turned the selection of political personnel into an oligarchic process. |
