Summary, etc. | Argentina’s African past, after being concealed, if not altogether denied, for a long time, is now resurfacing via a multiplicity of actors who are progressively crafting the contours of a black cosmopolitanism. Since the early 1990s, slave descendants, second-or-third-generation Cape Verdean immigrants, as well as sub-Saharan and Latin American immigrants have been bringing to light their ethnicity in a range of different ways. While more recent immigrants seek to tap into the economic resources of Africanness by turning to the ethos of the “traditional African” as keeper of ancestral cultures and techniques, Afro-Argentinians invest, rather, in the field of politics in the hope of obtaining reparations for manifold forms of discrimination suffered since the sixteenth century. |
