| Summary, etc. | Cet article interroge les recompositions du rapport entre nationalisme et (homo)sexualite en Europe a partir de l’exemple de la Pologne. L’analyse des processus de circulation de normes juridiques et militantes au cours de la periode de pre-adhesion a l’Union europeenne permet de comprendre comment la Pologne, et plus largement l’Europe centrale et orientale, ont ete constituees discursivement comme un « Autre » sexuel de l’Europe de l’Ouest, caracterise par son homophobie soi-disant « traditionnelle ». Ce phenomene a contribue a reproduire, en termes sexuels, la « division Est/Ouest » en Europe. Les militants gays et lesbiennes polonaises se trouvent ainsi dans une position specifique, prise dans l’alternative entre une definition de la nation qui les exclut et l’injonction modernisatrice de « l’Ouest ». |

| Summary, etc. | Analyzing the case of Poland, this paper questions recent changes in the relationship between nationalism and (homo)sexuality in Europe. Studying processes of norm circulation (in both the fields of law and of advocacy) prior to accession to the EU sheds light on how both Poland, and more broadly Eastern and Central Europe, have been discursively defined as Western Europe’s sexual “Other,” characterized by its supposedly “traditional” homophobia. This phenomenon has contributed to the reproduction of the historic East/West divide in terms of sexuality. Polish gay and lesbian activists are thus in a difficult position, caught between a definition of the Polish nation that excludes them and Western calls for modernity. |
