Summary, etc. Can we talk of the relationships between men and women as gifts? Certainly not. Christine Delphy answers Sylvie Duverger, since women and men are the equivalent of the proletariat and the bourgeoisie. Accordingly, patriarchy is an economic system of exploitation as is capitalism. Contrary to capitalism, patriarchy does not squeeze out “over-work” but simply work: the domestic production model is the economic basis of patriarchy. As capitalism creates classes, patriarchy divides between “men” and “women.” In the name of natural differences, it explains, or worse still justifies their historical condition of inferiority on the basis of women’s rapport to maternity. Yet, this article argues, biology has nothing to do with these segmentations while violent domination and the inferior classes’ dispossession of the means of production of their own existence, on the contrary, do certainly have.
