Summary, etc. | The gift can refer not only to the act of giving something to someone, in the active mode, but also to the fact that something is given to a subject, in the passive mode. In our culture, a gift in the second sense generally refers to an artistic gift. The latter is associated with the passivity of inspiration and with giving oneself to a vocation, and is diametrically opposed to the democratic value of merit. Only “grace” allows greatness to be bestowed on such an innate, unearned gift. This is why, among artists, the principle manifestation of religious Grace in the modern world is the artistic gift, while among performers who have achieved star status, it is the gift they make of their presence at certain events. |
