Summary, etc. | If animals play, can one not make the hypothesis that human culture supposes the existence of a pre-conditional field that is common to both humans and animals and is irreducible to functionality and utility? This hypothesis of a ‘ludic field’ that precedes and produces culture leads to the recognition of a transcendent dimension to play that encompasses all human activities. As with the gift, play, by the very fact of its archaism, manifests the anthropological conditions without which social life would be impossible. Still, is play not condemned to survive as a mere relic in contemporary societies as they estrange themselves from the particular alliance of rule and liberty constitutive of the spirit of play? |
