| Summary, etc. | Suggested in the text which follows, starting notably from the readings of Emile Poulat and Charles Taylor, we reflect on the idea that French secularism is not monolithic, but is based on principles which may conflict with each other. We will bring to light a today’s sharp conflict in France between secularism seen as freedom of conscience, and secularism seen as a philosophy willing individuals’ emancipation through the use of their reason. The reality today is that these conflicting positions oppose each other to a point that denies the public constitution of the freedom of conscience and its consequences. |
