| Summary, etc. | What were the motivations of people who chose to acquire Canadian citizenship through the Federal Immigrant Investor Programme? To answer this question, we draw on a series of nineteen semi-structured interviews conducted with people of Chinese origin who obtained Canadian nationality through this programme. Based on the concept of nationality as a system of social stratification on a global scale, this research shows that children’s education, access to spacious housing, and a good quality, health environment topped the list of reasons given by interviewees. Increased mobility, which is much discussed in the academic literature, is sought only insofar as it gives access to these goods. The desire to acquire a privileged status within the global capitalist system is also a source of motivation, with the Canadian passport representing an object of social distinction and a sign of belonging to one of the richest nations. |

| Summary, etc. | ¿Cuáles fueron las motivaciones de las personas que recurrieron a la ciudadanía canadiense por programa Inversor Inmigrante de Canadá? Para responder a esta pregunta, nos basamos en una serie de diecinueve entrevistas semiestructuradas realizadas a personas de origen chino que obtuvieron la nacionalidad canadiense a través de este programa. Basada en el concepto de nacionalidad como sistema de estratificación social a escala global, esta investigación muestra que la educación de los niños, el acceso a una vivienda espaciosa y a un ambiente sanitario de calidad encabezaron la lista de razones dadas. | Summary, etc. | Quelles étaient les motivations des personnes qui se sont tournées vers le programme canadien de citoyenneté par investissement ? Pour répondre à cette question, nous nous appuyons sur une série de dix-neuf entretiens semi-directifs effectués auprès de personnes d’origine chinoise ayant obtenu la nationalité canadienne par le biais de ce programme. Basée sur le concept de nationalité comme système de stratification sociale à l’échelle mondiale, cette recherche montre que l’éducation des enfants, l’accès à un logement spacieux et à un environnement sanitaire de qualité arrivent en tête des raisons avancées. La mobilité accrue, très discutée dans la littérature académique, n’est recherchée que dans la mesure où elle donne accès à ces biens. La volonté d’acquérir un statut privilégié au sein du système capitaliste mondial constitue également une source de motivation, le passeport canadien représentant un objet de distinction sociale et le signe d’appartenance aux nations les plus riches. |
