Summary, etc. | As part of the Green Deal, the “From Farm to Fork” (F2F) strategy unveiled by the European Commission in 2022 constitutes a vast plan to transform the way the European Union (EU) produces, consumes and lives, with the aim of reducing the impact of human activities on natural resources, the environment and ecosystems. The plan seeks to drastically reduce the environmental footprint of the European agri-food sector, provide consumers with healthier and more affordable food, and make farming practices more sustainable, while ensuring the EU’s food sovereignty. Given the major impact of this vital sector, which is part of a complex value chain, on natural resources, the environment and human health, its objectives are ambitious, and the road ahead is long. Furthermore, this strategy will have to be implemented in a difficult context, marked by a resurgence in inflation, particularly for food products, and by the rise in tensions created by the war in Ukraine, giving rise to opposing views among stakeholders in the agricultural sector, the industries that supply the main inputs, and also on the part of governments and within the European Parliament. Yet there is an urgent need for action, and an ambitious transformation of the European agri-food sector is possible, provided that it involves all those concerned in the chain, from farmers to consumers. |
