Summary, etc. Using strikingly direct language Pope Francis in his apostolic exhortation Evangelii gaudium, issued on November 26, 2013, lays out his economic vision: One which refuses a policy of exclusion and social inequality that breeds violence; which no longer considers economic growth as “the” answer to all evils; which denounces the globalization of indifference that we are witnessing today and stresses that “money must serve not rule”. These powerful statements have provoked fierce reactions within economic and ecclesiastical circles. Such reactions are hardly new. Beyond the reception issue that these reactions reflect, the very content of Pope Francis’s words are an encouragement to experience the challenges that arise in the global economic market as a means toward potential liberation, thus requiring an ethical approach. In line with his predecessor, Benedict XVI, and relying on recent economic investigations, the Pope develops the idea of an overhaul of the current economic model and the necessity to revert to a civil economy based on the attainment of the common good. Advocating a “ third way” the Pope neither calls for the socialization nor the liberalization of the economic system, but for an entirely new set of economic rules.
