Summary, etc. | In modern Western societies, economic growth is no longer a mere statistic: it has a meaning of its own, bearing a vision of the world and of life, giving meaning to our actions, and guiding and evaluating our commercial activities. We strive for an unlimited increase in wealth, in production, and in consummation, believing that economic growth promotes an ever-increasing wellbeing and represents a positive good. As Christians, how should position ourselves in the face of this belief in the power of growth? Beginning with a careful inventory of biblical images of growth, we offer a panoramic view of the subject in all of its meaningful abundance and richness. We argue that this material invites us to elevate growth to the level of a theological category in critical tension with the contemporary growthist imaginary. |
