Summary, etc. France saw 71,000 people admitted to psychiatric hospitals without their consent in 2010. The rate of compulsory admission is unevenly spread among countries, and within the countries themselves. Compulsory psychiatric treatment remains an exceptional occurrence, with preference given to treatment with full consent. Deemed necessary in certain cases, compulsory measures do nevertheless raise personal freedom issues and can pose a major problem for the teams providing the care and the individuals directly involved. Using psychiatric medical data compilations (RIM-P), this study will describe this category of the population. It will go on to examine the role of the geographical, socio-economic and health neighbourhood in explaining observed spatial disparities. It concludes that the social and economic neighbourhood plays a fundamental role in these variations.
