Summary, etc. In this article, we focus on the moral dilemmas faced by paid caregivers during the assistance and care they provide to those around them. We approach assistance as an activity that is similar to care and, as such, involves both work and intimate relationships. By being part of the context of assistance between relatives and within the domestic sphere, this assistance work involves authority relations linked both to the family and to hierarchical employment relations. Because of this double register, but also because of the variability of standards in each of them, paid carers face uncertainty in their negotiation of the boundaries of care work that is acceptable from their point of view. We hypothesize that, in this context, these trade-offs around aid work take the form of more or less open conflicts within the caregiver/assisted relationship and towards institutions, the approach to withdrawal from work, and resistance strategies seeking to set limits to the assistance provided.
