520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. The No Child Left Behind Education Act was signed by President George W. Bush in 2002. The goals it set for American education were ambitious as the law involved no less than overhauling the educational structures in order to improve overall student achievement and to bring about the equality of opportunity in education, objectives all presidents and educators had been dreaming of since the 1960s. Today some Congressmen, state governors, unions, and teachers express considerable doubt concerning the feasibility of the reforms envisioned by the federal government. No Child Left Behind was up for reauthorization in 2007, but so far has not been reauthorized. Instead, it has spawned much debate and sparked an open conflict between some states and the federal government. This article aims at sorting out the often contradicting information released by the different government agencies and organizations in order to better understand the situation in which American schools find themselves today.
