Summary, etc. ‪The aim of this exploratory study was to evaluate, in an educational context, the impact of a training programme aimed at improving the reading performance of Year 1 pupils. For this purpose, two groups of eight pupils of the same class were formed and pre-tested with standardised reading tests (decoding and comprehension). Then, during the last term of the school year (from April to June), one of the two groups received ten sessions of repeated reading, enriched with exercises focusing on decoding, encoding and word recognition. At the end of this training phase, the students were again assessed using the same tests. The comparison between the post-test performance of the trained group and the untrained group indicated that the programme had no impact on reading speed but suggested a positive change in overall reading level and accuracy. It seems, therefore, that reading fluency training can be offered to beginning readers, provided that it is accompanied by specific code-focused exercises, as long as this is necessary.‪
