Summary, etc. | The success of an healing cult like Asclepius’s in the Greek world is not only due to the emergence of new religious aspirations. There are factors of a different kind which intervene in the birth and the blossoming of his sanctuaries among which the role played by political societies which welcome them is often prevailing. The analysis of the case of Lebena during the hellenistic period allows to show how Gortyn, the leading neighbouring community, took care of and then promoted Asclepius’s sanctuary. The promotion of the sanctuary was mainly based on the development of a foundation legend which linked Lebena with Epidaurus. |
