Summary, etc. | By announcing a “quiet break,” Nicolas Sarkozy has certainly shown a willingness to distance himself from his predecessors, but this was not worth a renunciation of all the resources and the size of the legacy. Although the asymmetry of the balance of power between the partisan right constituents was proven right after May 6, 2007, political and social dynamics going beyond the traditional delineation of the classic right, ensured—thanks to this interplay—victory for Sarkozy. But his election fulfills a portion of the Caesarist expectations of the electorate and indicates longing, always at work in French society, for the strengthening of the Gaullist presidential office. |
