520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. Many studies have examined the potential benefits of reintroducing random selection to politics. Most proposals envision sortition as complementary process, rather than as a substitute to elections. This article aims first to highlight the properties and virtues that, at first glance, seem to make these two forms of selection complementary rather than competing mechanisms. In turn, however, it analyses their compatibility by underscoring the rivalry between these two modes of representation. Distinctions between the different uses of sortition shall then be outlined, placing emphasis on those forms which are best able to take advantage of this complementarity, and noting those which, on the contrary, are more likely to cause compatibility issues and even potentially engender a process of mutual delegitimization.
