Summary, etc. | During the Occupation period, numerous rumours circulated in Japan regarding the future of the monarchy and the personal fate of Hirohito. Among them, it was hinted that prominent members of the imperial family, including the emperor, might convert to Christianity. This contribution presents the sources of this rumour and the different stages of its development and dissemination in a broader perspective: the history of the relationship between the imperial institution and Christianity since the Meiji era. It also explores how the spreading of this rumour continues to affect the behaviour of the present imperial family and examines the place and role of Christianity among the bureaucratic elites surrounding the throne. |
