Summary, etc. A real Parisian institution and “commemorative occasion,” processions honoring Saint Geneviève were regularly held in the French capital between the High Middle Ages and the Revolution. Reflecting the mentalities and vulnerabilities of the society and the adventures of the kingdom, the processions reveal the larger political, economic, and cultural structures of the Ancien Régime. Numerous issues were related to this exceptional and highly symbolic phenomenon. This paper suggests that this old ritual disappeared in the 18th century due to major global changes.
