Summary, etc. On July 10, 1969, the establishment of diplomatic relationships between the GDR and Egypt rounded off the economic rapprochement process that had begun in the mid-fifties. Facing the failure of the Egyptian Left, East Berlin adopted a more flexible attitude toward political dissent. Links were developed with new kinds of actors, including religious ones, emerging within Egyptian civil society. The GDR backed the Egyptian power in its repression of the Muslim brothers and, at the same time, promoted the building of Islamist patriotic fronts. By analyzing how the GDR settled collaboration strategies with both institutions and religious organizations, this article intends to show to what extent the GDR doctrinal model was adapted to the specificities of the Egyptian field.
