| Summary, etc. | Waraná is the native name of the plant known internationally as “guaraná”. It is a psychoactive plant considered as an intellectual and physical energizer sold today in 170 countries, mainly in the form of energy drinks. However, guaraná has been the object of an alternative form of commercialization, especially since the 1990s. First of all, this paper will show that guaraná has followed a peculiar trajectory in the landscape of globalized Amazonian plants, which leads to defining it as a plant in the process of globalization. Thereafter, while Waraná, the Sateré Mawé designation of origin for guaraná, effectively fits into fair trade, the article examines how it extends its frontiers by including questions related to biodiversity, indigenous peoples, and benefit sharing. |
