Summary, etc. After the Second World War, new rivalries between the watchmaking firms led them to invest more in the field of sports timekeeping, with publicity in mind. After the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo, the Japanese firm Seiko threatened the Swiss monopoly on timekeeping at international sports competitions. Until then, it was shared by Omega and Longines, who were supported by their representatives within international sports organizations. In response, the president of the Swiss watchmaking federation, Gérard Bauer, made use of his network within Swiss diplomacy in order to defend the country’s watchmaking industry. This article examines the history of a rivalry between Swiss firms, and an international competition in the field of sports timekeeping.
