Summary, etc. The three archival documents presented here offer a synthesis of the Ottoman vision and priorities for preserving the status quo when confronted to the Russian attempt to challenge the system established by the Treaty of Paris (1856) and drastically limiting its ambitions in the Black Sea. They also illustrate the art of the diplomacy of the Sublime Porte at the London Conference of 1871, concerning the neutralization of the Black Sea and, as a corollary, the competing stakes at play for the riparian states of the sea and of the Danube, an international waterway since 1856.
