Summary, etc. |

Summary, etc. | Information as a source of cognitive dissonance (Festinger 1957) was questioned by the reformulation made by Brehm and Cohen (1962), which gave behavioural commitment as a necessary condition in the arousal of dissonance. First, this article supports the validity of informational dissonance, then it goes on to present two parallel experiments replicating a pilot trial in this field. The initial hypotheses are then re-evaluated by measuring the emotional arousal. The results taken together show that following exposure to counterattitudinal information, the attitude change which conforms to Brehm and Cohen is only observable in the free choice condition (Exp. 1) whereas psychological discomfort is observable whatever the modality of commitment (Exp. 2). These results show that the counterattitudinal nature of information is sufficient to arouse psychological discomfort, which is characteristic of dissonance. In conclusion, this article proposes to distinguish the existence of informational dissonance alongside behavioural dissonance. |
