Summary, etc. | The last book read by Nastasya Filipovna, the heroine of Dostoyevsky’s novel The Idiot, before she is killed by Rogozhin is Madame Bovary by Flaubert. This paper’s main concern is to throw light on the meaning of that reference, especially on the heroine’s relation to marriage and suicide. Broadly speaking, Dostoyevsky’s views on French society, especially the bourgeoisie, seem very close to Flaubert’s. Moreover, this reference could represent Dostoyevsky’s farewell to his own romanticism. |
