Summary, etc. | This study examines the transformations undergone by Arthurian armorials (lists of coats of arms) in the era of the printed book, and looks at the functions of these paratexts in the sixteenth century. The first two armorials concerned are those of François Regnault and Benoît Rigaud, which were inspired mainly by the list published by the famous Antoine Vérard at the start of his Guiron le Courtois of 1501. At the end of the sixteenth century, the Devise was translated and adapted into English by Richard Robinson. The old French armorial was integrated into Arthurian spectacles organized in English cities, where the identities of Arthurian knights became roles appropriated by the wealthiest members of the London bourgeoisie. Through the three examples investigated, Arthurian armorials emerge as a prestigious source for the neo-chivalric imaginary. |
