| Summary, etc. | L’ Illusion de Pierre Corneille se présente comme une expérience critique vécue en même temps par les personnages et les spectateurs : seule la scène, dans son dispositif parlant, optique et temporel, peut la déployer. C’est une leçon de choses sur la possibilité et la dissipation de l’illusion comme phénomènes conjoints. En comprenant le mécanisme de l’illusion, on découvre qu’on avait toujours eu tout, depuis le début, sous les yeux : ainsi, comprendre, c’est comprendre pourquoi on n’avait pas compris. Le dispositif théâtral est lui-même un objet méditatif, une cristallisation de pensée insépa-rable de deux dimensions constitutives du théâtre. D’abord la scène, à la fois dans ce qui la sépare et la relie à la salle et dans sa profondeur. Ensuite la temporalité. Car c’est le temps second qui, par sa rétroactivité, fait surgir la configuration morale : le sentiment qu’ il aurait fallu voir. La pièce est finie au moment où, une fois la profondeur déployée, toute la durée traversée jusqu’à ce moment vient se précipiter dans le seul instant qui vaut : celui de l’intellection. Dans cette pièce rigoureusement classique, l’esthétique « baroque » est mise en abyme et en dérision, renvoyée à sa platitude, puis elle est réor-donnée par l’économie de la vision à d’autres principes plus simples d’intelligibilité. |

| Summary, etc. | Pierre Corneille’s L’ Illusion is a critical experience that both the characters and spectators undergo at the same time. Only the stage—in its verbal, optical, and temporal aspects—can deploy such an experience. It is an “object lesson” on both the possibility and dissipation of illusion. By understanding the mechanism of illusion, we discover that we always had everything, from the beginning, before our eyes. We truly understand when we understand why we had not understood. The theatrical device is itself a meditative object, a crystallization of thought inseparable from two dimensions constitutive of the theater. First the stage, both in what separates it from and connects it to the auditorium, and in its depth. Second, the dimension of temporality. For it is the second step that brings out the moral dimension through its retroactivity: the feeling that we should have seen what we did not initially see. The play is over when, once the depth is deployed, everything experienced up to this point comes to precipitate itself in the only instant that matters: that of intellection. In this rigorously classical play, the “baroque” aesthetic is displayed by a device of mise en abyme and held in contempt, condemned for its flatness, and then reordered by the economy of vision according to other, simpler principles of intelligibility. |
