Summary, etc. The question of note taking in clinical group situations is an important one, which has however received insufficient attention. It is part of the clinician’s planning and internal framework, and should be thought through in detail. Taking notes questions our implicit choices about what is or is not relevant to observe, note and interpret, as well as our way of treating the clinical material during and after the sessions. For these reasons, it seems important to study our method of observation carefully. The aim of this article is to go over the necessary features of note taking relevant to a group setting, and to present a method which meets these criteria. This is a method of note taking developed for the group setting, with columns, aiming to link, but while still keeping separate, four distinct levels of psychic reality : description and observation of the group’s chain of associations, basic underlying scenarios, internal and inter-transference reactions, and hypotheses about the observed phenomena.
