Summary, etc. Cultural and social life of elderly people in Italy is changing. Levels of cultural and social participation of highly educated elderly people are increasing in particular between females. Elderly people with high level of education are still a minority but they are a new social subject with models of life very different from the stereotype of the elderly man who spend his time alone in his house. Illness, isolation or poverty are important problems that still affects elderly people but life of elderly is rapidly evolving and it is necessary to adopt a generation approach to foresee the future developments. This paper focuses on effects of gender and education on cultural and social life of elderly people in Italy dealing with the social changes undergone in the last 10 years among elderly people in Italy, basing upon data on cultural participation taken from Istat Multipurpose survey on “Everyday life”. It shows on one side social groups that are developing active models of cultural and social participation and on the other the still alienated social groups.
