Summary, etc. | While repairing the damage of economic forces, the mechanisms of social action produce what they sought to guard against, namely stigmatisation, discrimination, and even social exclusion. Leaving aside interpretations that question the very existence of such mechanisms, the author examines the reference frameworks in their construction and in the modes of public intervention. Drawing on empirical surveys of young people and their mothers, this article highlights the gap between the destandardisation of lifestyles and the obsolescence of the reference frameworks of public action on the family and age management. As if echoing these deadlocks, the European dynamic and the targets of the Lisbon Strategy on “building individual and social potential to enhance independence” offer new ways forward via the concept of the “social investment State”. Behind this concept, a double perspective is envisaged in the modes of State intervention: the “life course perspective” for social prevention, and the “life cycle perspective” for social support. These perspectives, which seem less discriminatory and more representative of the interdependence of men’s and women’s activities throughout life, would nevertheless gain from empirical examination. |
