Summary, etc. | The policy on management of older workers of the executives of French employers’ federations, principally the Conseil national du patronat français/Mouvement des entreprises de France (CNPF/Medef), is based on two contradictory principles : keeping senior workers on the labour market and actively participating in the institutionalisation of generous retirement and pre-retirement mechanisms. That apparent contradiction encourages us to question the French employers’ industrial relations policy development process. We intend to demonstrate that the positions of the executives of the CNPF/Medef on the issue of management of older workers reflect the balance of power within the bestknown employers’ representative organisation. Specifically, the position of CNPF/Medef executives depends on the balance between advocates of free-market practice and proponents of management of the labour factor. This fault line never jeopardises the unity of the CNPF/Medef since, whatever their approach, the executives accommodate practices that, depending on the demographics of the economic sector they are in charge of, best serve the interests of those whom they represent. |
