| Summary, etc. | Does Francis Kaplan’s description of a metaphysically agnostic Pascal provide a comprehensive account of the Pascalian project ? If the Pensées reject metaphysical proofs, the true reason is perhaps not that these are invalid but that they are ineffective. Among the motives invoked by Pascal is that they don’t function for everyone. Here we investigate this “ for everyone .” Indeed, the condemnation of such proofs could well be due to the fact that, in appealing to reason alone, these address only one part of the individual, and surely not that part which can attain to God, and only one part of humankind, namely the intellectually powerful. What remains to be considered, therefore, is whether there exists a non-discursive, natural apprehension of God, such that this could be accounted for by the reasons of the heart and not reason alone. |
