| Summary, etc. | This article analyzes the ambivalent forms of political expression used by the Shégués, the youth living on the streets of Kinshasa. As popular figures of an urban life dominated by an informal economy requiring street smarts, and as a mirror of the history of a state built through thievery and violence, the Shégués do not contest the established order whose codes and practices they have borrowed. However, they convey an image of success in the Kinshasa cityscape, as well as critical stances towards a contested sociopolitical order and its perceived lack of alternatives. |
