| Summary, etc. | In 1940 the International Bureau of Weights and Measures was one of the few international organizations to have its headquarters in the occupied zone. Throughout the war, this organization was put under pressure by the German Military Command and maintained continuous relations with the Vichy Government and many French institutions. This contribution aims to provide an overview of the history of this organization under the Occupation by analyzing its way of functioning and its sources of support in this particular context. It will examine the career path of its director Albert Pérard (1880-1960) and his network, the strategies implemented to adapt to the constraints of the Occupation and, more generally, to maintain international scientific cooperation in a world fractured by the war and a Europe under Nazi domination. This paper will examine the strategies used for adaptation and governance purposes, how these were continued and, conversely, disrupted. It will also look at the consequences of the “Vichy parenthesis” for this organization and the careers of its emblematic figures. |
