Summary, etc. | During the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, Argentina fans traveled in large numbers and flooded the streets (even more than the stadiums) unanimously singing a song of encouragement, renowned for its first verse: “Brazil, tell me how it feels.” The song, based on an old melody of the American rock band Creedence Clearwater Revival, was quickly adopted by hundreds of thousands of fans in Brazil and also millions in Argentina, becoming viral through social networks. In light of this phenomenon, this article analyzes the song and the musical and political traditions upon which it is based, as well as the relationship between music and nationality that follows from this analysis, while at the same time examining this relationship from the perspective of the history of the World Cup. The actions of the Argentine fans thus take the form of a musical performance within which it is possible to apprehend Argentine football culture, governed by narcissism and the logic of aguante (standing one’s ground). |
