Summary, etc. | Islamist radicalization is structured by two major competing currents that have undeniable convergences. The first is Islamism, the legacy of Hassan al-Banna, a political doctrine that seeks to build a state and a society that conform to religious law. The Muslim Brotherhood is at the very heart of this: hunted down in many Muslim states, they are developing a strategy to further their influence in Europe. The second is jihadist-Salafism, an armed messianism advocating a return to the roots of the pious ancestors (Salaf): Al Qaeda and Daesh are its fateful incarnations. The two movements confront each other both openly and in secret. To face these threats, the public strategy adopted in 2014 is multisectoral, adopting preventive and repressive measures that have drawn criticism on the basis of both human rights violations and their effectiveness. |
