Summary, etc. | This article examines the spatial configurations of work in order to reconsider the hypothesis of socialization between different social groups, particularly in the service industry. From the analysis of the spaces in a luxury hotel, which reveals the clear hierarchy between guests and employees, two patterns of socialization are identified, which enables us to consider the ambivalent effects of spatial configurations on individuals. The pattern of subalternization, resulting from the constant undervaluation of employees in the spatial organization of work, is clear in the area around the hotel, in which employees tend to remain within a group of service workers. The acculturation pattern, resulting from proximity with the upper classes in the hotel environment, is more evident in leisure mobility and care for the home, that is, once the hotel’s hold on employees decreases. Thus, this article argues that working in the service industry produces amongst employees both tendencies toward the adoption of new cultural traits, and tendencies toward cultural separation. |
