520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. French workers’ organization — trade unions first and foremost — initially defined by antimilitarism and anticlericalism, nevertheless adopted the religious and military emblems that are banners and flags rather early and in a long-lasting way. This article looks at the emergence of these markers of class and professional occupation, which often arose prior to organizations being formally developed. It focuses on how flags and banners were produced, as well as their various uses, both ritualistic and capable of political effects, and the institutionalization of such uses. Since the last third of the century, flags have gradually been abandoned in favor of banners and signs, which has encouraged certain workers’ organizations to call for policies to protect this cultural patrimony.
