Summary, etc. Why is recognition of the Armenian Genocide of 1915-1916 still such an important issue today? What does this say about contemporary sensitivities to this episode? This article traces the progressive politicization of memory of the Armenian Genocide in the second half of the 20th century, occurred simultaneously—and clashed with Turkish denial. It shows the internationalization of this issue from the years 1990-2000 to the centenary of 2015, stressing the cases of France and the United States, which are particularly revealing of the dynamics and domestic political stakes of such recognition given the size of their Armenian communities and the place of memorial issues in public life.
