| Summary, etc. | Outlining the history of the social sciences after 1945, in the context of the increasingly transnational circulation of knowledge, obliges us to contemplate the international dimension of scientific careers. For Michel Crozier—one of the leading French social scientists post-1960—his relationship with the United States was crucial to the success of his career. Providing scientific opportunities, academic support, and general intellectual inspiration, the United States was an amazing springboard for him. Nevertheless, as a consequence of splitting his time between these two countries, Crozier’s thought became an expression of critical distance towards both France and the United States. Ultimately, this may explain his relative lack of fame on both sides of the Atlantic. |
