520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. This article aims to show that Mary E. Richmond’s work was strongly motivated by her desire to legitimate the social worker as a professional. Responding to Abraham Flexner’s criticisms, she developed a comprehensive strategy which made reference to Andrew Abbott’s notion of a system of professions. The development of the method of social casework is the central feature of this strategy. The author asks whether the professionalizing model, distinctive to twentieth-century social work, is historically sustainable.
