Summary, etc. Prolonging working life means conceiving a coherent process to facilitate growing older at work and therefore coordinating policies on retirement with those on employment and work. Since 2003, there have been many changes: reduction of early retirement schemes, prolongation of the age of retirement, increase in unemployment and persistence of early departure from work for health reasons, development of possibilities for work after retirement. Work conditions (ergonomics, work at night, pressure on time, changes, etc.) are a determining factor for staying in work and for leaving it. Aging involves a weakening of the body, an increase or decrease in the effects of environment-related wear and tear. These effects are very variable and more or less well tolerated as a function of several factors: the work situation, the possibilities of adaptation, and the capacity of the individual to draw upon his or her experience. All these issues reflect the importance of the sustainability of work systems.
