| Summary, etc. | RésuméSi la pauvreté a fortement diminué en Chine au cours des vingt dernières années, cette réduction a été très inégale selon les provinces et s’est accompagnée d’une augmentation de l’inégalité des revenus par tête entre la ville et la campagne. Nous étudions l’impact sur cette inégalité de la politique de change, qui s’est traduite par une forte dépréciation réelle avant 1994, puis une certaine appréciation suivie d’une stabilisation. Nous concluons que dans les provinces de l’intérieur, où la pauvreté est la plus grande, l’appréciation réelle a contribué à réduire l’inégalité ville/campagne alors que la dépréciation l’avait augmentée. Ce résultat est un argument en faveur d’une réévaluation du renminbi.Classification JEL : F31, O15, O53, P21. |

| Summary, etc. | If poverty has been significantly deceased in China during the last twenty years, this decrease was very unequal across the provinces and was accompanied by an increase of the urban and rural per capita income disparity. We studied the impact on this last one of the exchange rate policy, which was marked by a strong real depreciation before 1994, then a certain appreciation followed by a stabilization. We concluded that in the interior provinces where the poverty is the most important, the real appreciation has contributed to reduce the disparity, where the real depreciation had increased it. This result is an argument in favor of a re-evaluation of the renminbi. |
