| Summary, etc. | RésuméL’objectif de cet article est de tester l’impact du récent choc pétrolier sur la performance des marchés du mil au Niger. Dans ce pays où les coûts de transport représentent l’essentiel des coûts de commercialisation des céréales, on peut craindre que l’augmentation du coût des carburants entraîne un ralentissement des échanges, l’activité commerciale devenant moins rentable, et aggrave les tensions sur les marchés locaux de céréales. Partant de l’hypothèse d’arbitrage spatial des marchés, l’écart de prix entre deux marchés est modélisé comme une fonction non linéaire des coûts de transaction. Par rapport aux modèles standards, les coûts de transaction et la vitesse de correction des déséquilibres par rapport à la relation de long terme varient en fonction du prix des carburants. Un modèle de panel à seuil est estimé sur un échantillon de 66 paires de marchés, couvrant la période allant de janvier 1990 à octobre 2008. Les résultats montrent une réduction de la vitesse de correction des déséquilibres de prix avec l’augmentation du prix du pétrole. L’hypothèse d’un ralentissement des échanges de céréales lié à l’augmentation du prix du pétrole ne peut donc être rejetée. Classification JEL : C33, C83, O13, O55, Q13 |

| Summary, etc. | This paper aims at testing the impact of the recent oil boom on the performance of grain markets in Niger. In this country transport costs constitute the bulk of trade costs so that the spike in fuel price may negatively affect trade thus leading to shortages and price tensions on local grain markets. Assuming that markets are spatially arbitrated, the price spread between two spatially separated markets is modelled as a non linear function of transaction costs. Compared to standard models, transaction costs and the speed of adjustment to long run equilibrium are allowed to vary with the fuel price. A threshold panel model is estimated on a sample of 66 market pairs covering the period January 1990-October 2008. Results show that the adjustment speed of prices reduces when fuel price increases. As a consequence the hypothesis of a slow down in grain trade following the oil boom cannot be rejected. |
